Windows Defender Detects Windows as Unwanted

Posted in: Uncategorized by admin on March 09, 2009

Today’s Windows Defender scan prompted me to clean my MSDN ISO for Windows XP today. Something tells me the recommended action of “Clean” could be a bad thing.

Update, there seems to be additional reports of Windows Hosts files being false positives. This time a copy of Hosts in the WinSXS directory.

  1. We just got the same warning – no idea what to do. Help file has no reference to an action named “Clean”, there are no results when searching for “clean” at the Defender forums at MS, and there is no mention of an action named “Clean” anywhere in Defender documentation at MS.

    Resources File is listed as:
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

There is no other information listed on the Scan Results page.

  2. Clean is a general term for “Remove the infection”. In my case Windows was misdiagnosing a windows installer (.iso) as infected. Your case might actually be a legitimate infection. Clean is usually the best course of action to take in most cases.
